Happy Birthday Dad...

A couple weeks back Jack (with a little help from Mom) got me this sweet tee shirt for my birthday..

Later that weekend Jack and I went to Beverly hospital to "Daddy Boot Camp."  I took this class about two months before Jack was born and after you take the class, they ask you to participate after your child is three months old to "show the ropes" aka - changing poopy diapers etc. to other expectant dads.    It was a lot of fun and in general Jack kept a reasonable level of crankiness throughout the whole class. I feel very lucky that Jack is a healthy baby and does not have digestive issues that require him to drink prune juice to help out his stomach as witnessed by all the dad's during a complete diaper explosion by one of the other babies during the class.  It required the help of three dads and a box of wipes to clean. We also got this sweet tee shirt...

The following Friday was very surreal.  Of course unless you were living under a rock, the entire world was shook by the incident in Newtown.  Frankly I was very emotional every time I saw the news and had no idea what to think of the situation. It was pretty fantastic to have this little guy to hug and hold tight.  Jack smiled and giggled the whole weekend.

Thanks for making these past few weekends awesome Jack

Love,

Dad

Dinner Interruptions

Just another night of interrupting dinner with cuteness (or crankiness).

Laughs

Jack has mastered smiling and is now starting to laugh as well.
Unfortunately, he is also starting to recognize the phone and often will stop laughing/chatting/being generally cute as soon as we try to record him doing so.
You will have to use your imagination for now, but trust me, his laugh is pretty great.

Scary Santa

Is Jack bored by Scary Santa?

Or are they actually conspiring something?
(See "Knives" post below.)

Knives

Every night during bath time, Jack takes a special interest in the knives that are attached to the cabinet on a magnetic strip.
I am posting this so that if Derrick and I are found hacked into pieces and Jack is nowhere to be found, you might have an idea of what happened.

(Of course Jack loves us and would never do such a thing.  At least not until he is old enough to realize there is a photo of him having a bath on the internet.)

Travel Times

This is what your car looks like when you travel with a baby.

We took Jack to NJ for Thanksgiving.  He did really well on his first long car ride and slept for most of the time except when we woke him up to eat.
He got to hang out with his grandparents for a few days and meet some other family and friends for the first time.  Jack hammed it up and charmed everyone.
Now we're trying to get back into the swing of things at home!

Boston and Pizza

Today was Jack's first trip into the city. He was pretty excited to hit the city in his sporty coat. We walked around Porter Square and came home and made pizza. Jack is getting tired of this bottle stuff and from the smile on his face, I think he's a fan of pizza.

Rebel

"No swaddle is strong enough to hold me!"

"This is what I think of you trying to get me to do tummy time!"

Jack was a rebel today.  First, I found him awake from his nap completely unswaddled.  Later, I put him on his tummy so he could work those neck and shoulder muscles and he promptly fell asleep (but then I got to trim his fingernails while he slept...muahahaha).

In other sleep news, we transitioned Jack to sleeping on his bed at night on Monday and it has been going well so far!  He will generally sleep from 6-8 hours (mostly six), eat, and then sleep another 2-3 hours at this point, which is fine by me.

Shots and Voting

Jack had a big day today.  He had his two-month checkup and shots (despite being nine weeks old) and also went and voted.

He is now 23" long, up one inch from his last checkup, and weighs in at a whopping 13lbs 5oz., up about three pounds since his last checkup.  He did pretty well with his vaccinations and seems to be feeling okay, but we'll see how things go overnight.

From the doctor's office, we headed to the voting booth.  Jack is still a bit too young to vote, but I snuck him in anyway.  (Of course, he slept through the whole process.)

His next checkup is not until the first week of January when he will be four months old, which sounds far away now but I'm sure will arrive in a flash.

Z is for Zamboni

Derrick's cousin from NJ plays hockey in a travel league and last weekend his team had a tournament in our area, so Jack got to experience his first hockey game.
He was mostly interested in the bright fluorescent lights overhead and the people sitting behind us.  But there will be plenty of time for him to learn about/watch hockey, I'm sure.
Here he is being uninterested in the zamboni and showing you his stellar double chin.

More Tummy Time

"Why do you keep putting me on my tummy, you crazy lady?"

Despite his protests, Jack is getting pretty good at lifting his head and doing his mini pushups.  He is also getting better everyday with the smiles, is starting to grab things (like long hair) and is just beginning to "talk" a little bit, which is far more pleasant than the grunting that he's been proficient in since week four.

Jack is working on his 6-week milestone of his first "real" smile.  He's getting there!

He has the pouty lip down pat, though.

Pizza

Last Friday Derrick had the day off, so we went to Diaper Lab in Somerville to learn all about cloth diapers.

Derrick has been determined to go out to eat with Jack, so while we were in Davis Square we decided to have an early dinner at Flatbread.  It was a great success in that Jack did not have a meltdown and spent his time sleeping, eating or staring at the lights overhead.

He didn't seem too impressed with the pizza, though.

Topsfield Fair - Second Attempt

Friday was a beautiful day, so Derrick left work a bit early and we took Jack to the fair.

It didn't exactly go as I had envisioned.  We spent a good portion of the time dealing with dirty diapers, feeding and trying to calm him down.  I think maybe he was a bit overstimulated with all the loud noises, smells, etc.

"Oh my god, where did you crazy people bring me?"

A little bit of people watching.

We will try again next year when chances are good he will be walking and that will make it a whole different adventure.

One Month Checkup

Jack being his casual self in his giant diaper, waiting for the pediatrician.

Today was Jack's one month checkup (already!)  Thankfully this time he did not pee all over the table.

He has gained about two pounds since his last checkup for a grand weigh-in of 10 lbs. 5.8 oz (!) and has grown another inch, now measuring 22".

Though this seemed like a lot of weight gain to me, he is measuring around the 60th percentile for both weight and height, so he is pleasantly "average".

Other than that, he is in good health and took his shot like a champ!

Topsfield Fair

This morning we went to my grandmother's house for the opening day parade for the Topsfield Fair.  Jack was either unimpressed or sleeping for the entirety of the parade.

Meh...

After the parade we went inside for the annual fried dough feast.

This reaction seems about right.

Jack stayed at the house with nana and great-nana while Derrick and I braved the cold, damp weather to visit the fair.  We will be sure to bring him on his inaugural visit to the fair next weekend as long as the weather cooperates.

Roller Coaster

Sometimes Jack looks like this when he's sleeping.

I like to think he's dreaming about being on a roller coaster.

So what do you want to do Labor day weekend?

So what do you want to do Labor Day weekend?

Well someone answered that question.
Mr. Jack Henry decided to come in and rock our world, September 2nd, 2012 at 4:38 am.

Just born with a new cap on his head!

All the stats right here...

In the family tradition, Mr. Jack is "very mucousy" and has his father's sinuses.

What are you lookin' at?

A very happy family, even at 4:38 in the morning...

Welcome to the Crib

Welcome to Jack Rocks the Crib

This site is to share info and pictures of our newborn son Jack.

Jack likes eating, sleeping, grunting, car rides, and being wrapped up like a burrito.

Jack's dislikes are clothes, diaper changes, and baths.

Enjoy...
